Mother of Pearl
Nacre is secreted by the epithelial cells of the
mantle tissue of certain species of mollusk. In
these mollusks, nacre is continually deposited
onto the inner surface of the animal's shell (the
iridescent nacreous layer, commonly known as
mother of pearl), both as a means to smooth
the shell itself and as a defense against
parasitic organisms and damaging detritus.
The birthstone for July, the ruby is the red
variety of the mineral corundum. Historically, it
has symbolized love and passion, considered
an aid to firm friendship, and believed to ensure
beauty. It can range in color from purplish or
bluish red to a yellowish red down to clear, but
the finest color is a vivid, almost pure spectral
red with a very faint undertone of blue, as seen
in Burmese rubies, which are considered the
finest. The ruby is a very brilliant stone and is
also a very hard, durable, and wearable stone.
Gold-filled is defined as a layer of 10kt or better
gold mechanically bonded under heat and
pressure to another metal, then rolled or drawn
to a given thickness. The quantity of the gold
must be at least 1/20th of the item's total weight.
The item must be marked as 10, 12 or 14kt
gold-filled. Gold-filled is much thicker than gold
plated, and gold-filled items are generally
considered lifetime products. All DM Design
products use only 14/20 karat gold fill
Pearls should not be exposed to water,
cleansers, excessive perspiration or prolonged
sunlight. They may be cleaned with a soft cloth.
Sterling silver will tarnish over time. To clean,
use a polishing cloth, commercial cleaner or
sprinkle a fair amount of dry baking powder on
a soft cloth. Rub carefully to avoid scratching
stones or glass components. When done,
shake the powder off.
